Mick’s Rules For Living (Subject to Revision)

January 14, 2011

[Note: All of these fall under the Prime Rule: Illegitimi non carborundum. Never Let The Bastards Win.]

  1. Do no harm. (Harm is defined as physical and emotional stress at such a level as to inflict an unhealthy result. But, given the Karmic Rule [#2] people should get what they ask for. NOTE: this does not include physical harm. Ever. Even though I still often fantasize about it.)
  2. Karma applies. Always. This is part of the cause and effect nature of the nature and the universe.
  3. Don’t live any further from a bar than a decent walk (20-30 minutes) or a bus ride (no more than 45 minutes) will allow, unless someone sober is driving.
  4. Be honest with the people you love (especially yourself) and be honest in writing. Always.
  5. Only apologize when it’s sincere. Don’t apologize ever for being yourself… unless that causes you to break either Rule #1 or Rule #2. Then it may be time to reconsider things.
  6. Never offend a bartender, a secretary, or a janitor. These are the people who run the world.
  7. Tip well. Servers work for a living. (See Rule #6)
  8. Be kind to all critters smaller than yourself. Humans have bigger brains than most of the critters in nature. Think about it.
  9. Never subjugate yourself to the will of others. Ever. It’s better to be wrong than to sell out.
  10. A person, like a poem, will always need revision. Learn to know the difference between when it’s time to revise and when it’s time to leave it alone.
